Michelle Obama made an appearance at the Elizabeth Garret Anderson School in Islington yesterday. I’m sure many pupils up and down the UK are shouting THAT IS SO NOT FAIR! Anyway Michelle made a really nice speech yesterday and touched on the importance of getting an education amongst other things. Mrs Obama said "I never cut class. I loved getting As, I liked being smart. I liked being on time. I thought being smart is cooler than anything in the world….You, too, with these values, can control your own destiny. You, too, can pave the way."
It is so refreshing to have a role model that can demonstrate the importance of learning. Especially when the society we live in seems to focus on quick fixes and when young women aspire to become WAGS or appear on reality TV programmes to make a career for them selves. It seems we get to an age where we think we have learnt everything errrr NO!
I have jumped onto the learning bandwagon and am dedicating 2009 to gaining new skills. As apart from work and University I haven’t really challenged myself mentally. So I have enrolled onto a Drama and Vocal Training course which starts in a few weeks time. I can honestly say I’m excited as I know that this course is an investment for my future and will also help me gain even more confidence. Already I am thinking of what course to do once my drama one ends and I am really interested in Psychology. As there is another career/side path I am thinking of going into.
In these times you need to be multi skilled and indispensable come on now! We need to step outside of our comfort zone and explore new things, instead of playing it safe all the time. We have the potential to do so much more but half the time we never challenge ourselves to take that next step. I know I will be watch this space….

Talk about long overdue - this is what I have been waiting for for a very long time. A fantastic role model who celebrates being smart and the value of education and hard work. Go Michelle!! Hopefully young ladies and men will see this and learn a few things and realise that you can't just get rich by being on Big Brother or dating a footballer.
Good post hun - you KNOW it's all about self-investment (high-five)! (And I LOVE MICHELLE! She's definitely a role model for me)
